Major Herbert Luhn

Herbert Luhn was born into a Lutheran family in Racine, Wisconsin in 1928.  He was attracted to The Salvation Army Boy Scout Troop and soon became fully engaged in all of the Corps activities.

He graduated from high school in 1947, attended St. Paul Bible Institute for one year and then entered the School for Officers' Training, being commissioned in 1950.  He attend ICO in 1975.

In 1953 he married Carol Killackey of Detroit, Michigan.  Their five children, Earl, Loreen, Collette, Paul and William, all married, have provided them with nine grandchildren, Lisa (Dan) Bell, David (Samantha) Webster, Matthew (Heather) Luhn,  Mark (Cat) Jake Luhn, Jesse (Stephanie) Luhn, Mason (Jordan) Luhn, Andi Henderson, Alex Henderson and six great grandchildren.

Corps appointments included one year assisting at Milwaukee Temple, opening a new corps in Wausau, Wisconsin, and serving as Corps Officers in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Kansas Cith Penn Valley, Missouri, Alpena, Michigan, Owosso, Michigan, Detroit Citadel, Michigan (relocated the Corps to Dearborn Heights and build the corps building there), and Flit Citadel, Michigan.

The following fifteen years were spent in a variety of administrative positions including Divisional Secretary, SFOT, and the THQ Human Resources and Corps Growth Departments.  After retirement in 1993, he continued to work in a variety of corps and headquarters positions.

Major Luhn, in retirement, served for 14 years at the Norridge Citadel Corps where he taught the Adult Sunday School class and served on various councils.  He was called upon often to speak at officers' councils, to special at corps around the territory and to teach about holiness at many conferences.  He has been published many times in the War Cry, The Officer Magazine and regularly in the Retired Officers Encore Magazine.

One of his great achievements was to have his book published, "Holy Living:  The Mindset of Jesus" which has been read and studied around the world.

Major Luhn was preceded in death by his wife Carol, May 2016 and his granddaughter, Andi Henderson, September 2023.
