Phyllis I. Mortl, 93, passed away at home in Sturtevant on Sunday, May 24, 2026. She was born on December 21, 1932, to Hollister W. Phillips and Minnie Marie Jensen Philips in Kingsford Heights, Michigan.

Phyllis married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Mortl on August 5, 1950. They were lifelong members of St. Sebastian's Catholic Church in Sturtevant.

Phyllis worked as a cashier at Nering's Grocery Store in Sturtevant for 34 years. She was secretary of the P.T.A. at the Sturtevant school when her son, Stephen, was in kindergarten. She was a Brownie leader for her daughter, Donna, and her grade school class. Phyllis belonged to a hat club that made hats of all colors and designs for young and old. She made her daughter-in-law Debra's (Braun), wedding hat when Debra married her son, Ted.

Phyllis loved to knit and crochet. She made many scarves and doilies over the years. Phyllis enjoyed other crafts also. Including greeting cards, quilling machine embroidery, sewing and more. Phyllis belonged to Racine County Extension Homemakers for many years until it was disbanded as funds for it went away.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Jane Carlson, Donna (Randy) Cox, Ted (Debra) Mortl, and Tom Mortl; grandchildren, Heather, Tiffany, Nicholas, Kyle and Alexa; great grandchildren, Giavana, Caiden, Nyko, Westly, Amiya, Lyla and Luna; and her brother, Frank (Sandy) Phillips.

Phyllis was preceded in death by numerous family members including her son, Stephen Mortl, and husband, Robert (Bob) Mortl.

Visitation will take place at Miller Reesman Funeral Home on Saturday, May 30 from 9:45am – 10:30am with a prayer service to begin at 10:30am. Burial will immediately follow at Union Grove Memorial Cemetery.
